Last week I told you about the amazing rental we stayed in located in the historical neighborhood of Santurce in San Juan. I fell in love with this neighborhood. Santurce comes alive at night with locals enjoying music and delicious food and drinks in an area known as “La Placita,” which literally means “The Little Plaza.” During the day this little plaza is a market of fresh fruits and veggies. If you plan on cooking yourself, this is a great place to pick up anything you might need!

El Coco de Luis will delight your tastebuds
There are also several businesses and small cafes that are open every morning. One of them is “El Coco de Luis,” and it’s actually a bar but they do serve food as well. Their claim to fame is that they make the best Mojito in Puerto Rico. I didn’t get the chance to sample one but their breakfast was fantastic! There is no actual menu since the availability of ingredients changes daily so just ask whats available. You can go wrong with one of their delicious breakfast sandwiches and a fresh passion fruit juice! They also gave us a sample of their homemade sancocho which is the perfect comfort food.
La Placita is also a place where you will find little old men gathering in the morning enjoying their coffee & reading the newspaper. You might even catch them in a heated game of dominoes which is a favorite past time in Puerto Rico. These two guys were here several days in a row feeding all of the pigeons!
There is also an abundance of cats in La Placita and all over Puerto Rico! This little cutie above was hunting the pigeons in the plaza and sadly he actually caught one. Before Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico was actually overpopulated with dogs. Many died during the hurricane though and now there are cats everywhere! I wanted to adopt all of them! My only complaint about La Placita is that I didn’t get to spend more time there. If you are planning to travel to Puerto Rico I highly suggest you pull yourself away from the beaches to explore a little more. Take at least one day to explore a little town like Santurce where you will get a real feel for the old world charm that Puerto Rico has to offer!
