IKEA IVAR HACK: Elegant Sideboard Coffee Bar
- No Comments
- ATLANTA, GA
I am a total sucker for Ikea hacks, especially with the IVAR cabinets because they are narrow and work beautifully for small spaces. The Ikea Ivar cabinets are also unfinished solid pine wood, so they make a perfect blank slate for anything you can imagine. I decided to create a beautiful sideboard coffee bar for the small hallway outside of my master bedroom and it turned out just how I imagined.

ikea ivar hack Supplies
I’m not going to give you a super detailed step by step for this Ikea Ivar Hack simply because this is so easy. I also finished mine before I took pictures. Originally I didn’t plan to create a tutorial either but I will give you an easy rundown of how I made this. If you have any trouble or questions feel free to comment the post and I will help you with anything that you have issues with.
First make sure to purchase the supplies I listed by clicking the images below. Besides the IVAR cabiness you will also need to purchase a piece of wood to make the top. Buying a custom piece of pine wood can be expensive but I found this pine board at Home Depot for only $33 and they cut it to the exact dimensions I needed.

Instructions
1
Assemble both Ivar cabinets but leave off the doors and leave the shelves out. This makes the process of staining and added your handles easier.
Set your cabinets side by side on a level surface. Connect them using two mending plates at the back and two on the bottom.
2
Stain all of your pieces including cabinets, shelves, doors and extra wood panel for the top. I used Varathane stain in the color espresso.
Once your stain is dry give the entire piece a coat of satin finish lacquer- I prefer the Minwax Brushing Lacquer.
3
Once the lacquer is completely dry attach your cabinet handles to the 4 doors. At this point you would also want to attach your legs to the console as well.
Once your hardware is attached, insert your shelves and attach your doors to the console
4
Take the wood panel for the top and attach it using wood glue. Once Dry, add two more mending plates at the back to secure the top to the console.
I also recommend addind several screws from the inside to connect the top piece. This will add some extra security if you ever pick it up from the top.

How I styled it
I keep my Keurig Mini as well as an older drip machine that I have on top of this console. My main espresso machine I use on my first-floor coffee bar but these two machines work perfectly here. I also added a cute little ribbed glass mug set that I picked up from Hobby Lobby. Everything else is from Amazon. The ribbed travertine tumbler is perfect for holding coffee spoons and I found a little glass jar for holding sugar. The small bar mat is also a great addition to your coffee bar to catch and spills and keep messes to a minimum.

add a pretty vase
styled with faux florals and greenery
Styling a console or table doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. Try to look for things you already have around your house like old vases or glassware. I was able to create this elegant look with an old vase I already had at home from Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby is also one of my favorite places to shop for faux florals. Many of them look realistic and are very good quality.
For this vase I added some faux Eucalyptus and Lamb’s Ear greenery as well as one of my favorite pink roses that you can also find at Hobby Lobby. I have this pink roses all over my house and they are so pretty and give suck an elegant girly vibe to any space!
thrifted Glassware
adds an elegant touch of class
I absolutely love pretty glass ware and awhile back I found this beautiful glass dish while thrifting. I knew it would be perfect for the space and I was right. It’s the perfect size to hold about 10 K-Cups, making it a functional piece for the coffee bar that also looks pretty too!
I highly recommend thrift store when looking for glassware like this. I think I paid about $5 for this piece which was a steal! Thrift stores like goodwill sypically have an endless supply of glassware like this so you are bound to find something.

I finished off the space with some beautiful forest prints and frames from Desenio. I may move them up a bit higher though, so I have room to add a shelf but I’m still undecided. So I’m curious what you think about this project. Would you try this Ikea IVAR Hack yourself? How would you design this coffee bar/sideboard and would you style it differently?
