Learning to Love my Curly Hair

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my curly hair. Back in the day curly perms were in style but I never needed one so at that time I could just load up on gel and scrunch away and be good-to-go. Then when I got to high school straight hair was “in” and I fried my hair straight with a flat iron. I did that so much that eventually my hair was so dry and damaged that it looked like a broom. One major hair chop later I had healthy hair growing in and I vowed never to touch a flat iron again.

I still didn't love my curls though
That doesn’t mean that I embraced my curls though. I still got blow outs and straightened it at home, against my husbands wishes of course! He loves curly hair and never could understand why I hated it so much. Day 2 my hair always looked like crap and I just couldn’t handle it. Occasionally I would still wear my natural curly hair but after years and years of straightening it ……I messed up the natural curl pattern and my hair was worse than ever. I also struggled with finding products that wouldn’t make my hair feel “crunchy”. Curly-headed girls you know what I’m talking about. I tried other products that didn’t make my hair crunchy, but they did make it too oil and weighed down.
New Products make a huge difference
Recently I was researching the curly girl method which you can learn about here, but I was really on the hunt for products. Everyone seems to come to the conclusion that products free of sulfates and parabens are the way to go. I kind of already knew this but still just bought whatever products I found…paying no mind to the ingredients. Somehow I found the brand DevaCurl and girls ….I am obsessed. All of the products are sulfate and paraben free and I have zero crunch to my hair whatsoever! They even have a guidebook out that will show you everything you need to know about your beautiful curly hair!
What I picked up...
I purchased the kit you see pictured above. This kit includes the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in cream and a styling cream. Keep in mind the shampoo also does not lather. That was strange to me at first, but my hair really feels very healthy and moisturized. So much so, that I don’t even need to use the conditioner. Normally shampoos before would strip my curly hair so much that conditioner was a must or I would not even be able to brush it but now I don’t even need it. I still add a pea-sized amount just for extra moisture but I could skip it if I had to. After I’m done conditioning I put a small amount of the leave-in cream and then let my hair air dry. If I’m going out somewhere I use the styling cream as well just to tame my curls a bit more.
I’ve you struggle with your wavy or curly hair …..I highly suggest trying DevaCurl products and read up on the curly girl method. I’m not an expert by any means because I just started this journey myself. After 36 years I now feel like I love my natural hair! Don’t be afraid to embrace the hair you were born with ladies! If we want the future generations of young ladies to love themselves we need to be their example. I try every day to teach my daughter to love herself and embrace her hair and her body but the best way to do that is to show her myself.

i can't make any promises...
Now I can’t promise I will never wear my hair straight again because let’s face it, it’s easy. When my hair is straight there are virtually no tangles and even a messy bun looks cute. However, I am going to first try restoring my natural curl pattern and that may take awhile. Plus my hair can’t take the humidity during the summers in the south so it’s gonna be natural curly hair for the next few months at least.

Your hair looks amazing!!! I had curly hair, but after years of flat ironing, it’s barely curly now. My daughter, she has my curly hair, so I’ll have to check these products out to use in her hair.
Yes same with me ……all you did was alter your curl pattern but you can get it back with the right products and care!
Your long curly hair is beautiful!! It’s funny cuz I always wanted hair just like this when I was younger ? My hair’s wavy and I’m def looking into these products!
Definitely check them out! I love that they don’t make my hair crunchy either!
Your hair is stunning! I’ve always had straight hair, but in high school I was dying to have pretty curls like yours! I tried a perm freshman year of college but it did NOT really look good- haha!

I have naturally curly hair and I’m sad to say I am a slave to the hair straighteners but you’ve inspired me to give my curls another go. I will definitely be checking out these products and read about the curly girl method. Thanks so much for sharing. Your hair by the way looks beautiful!
Hi Rowena! Thank you so much! Yes i have been a slave to the straight hair for yearsssssssssssssss! but I’m trying this natural hair for a bit! I would definitely give it another go girl! Curly hair is beautiful!
Love your hair. I’ve spent so many years straightening my hair, I feel like I lost all my curls
My hair is very curly and gets fuzzy, so I’ve gone the straightener, flat iron route for many years. I’d love to try curly again if I could find a way to make it look good and not a bunch of unruly frizz. I’m going to take a close look at this product, thanks! #fancyfriday
Oh i’m going to have to check out the Deva Curl products cause I’m always on the hunt for a good haircare for curly hair. Thanks for the recommendation!
Oh my gosh, your curls are gorgeous! My hair is naturally board straight, so I’ve always been a little envious of curly-haired ladies.
awww thank you so much! I swear we always want what we don’t have!. My whole life i wanted straighter hair….but I’m finally loving mine as it is!
